Sassuolo Day Tour: Ducal Palace and Salse di Nirano
Sassuolo is known around the world for ceramics, but its historic centre also preserves an important cultural heritage connected with the Este dynasty and the history of the Duchy of Modena.
The Ducal Palace became an elegant court residence during the seventeenth century, with monumental halls, frescoes and elaborate Baroque decoration designed to impress the guests of the Este dukes.
Only a short journey away, the landscape changes completely at the Salse di Nirano, where geological activity creates small cones and pools of cold mud in the foothills of the Modena Apennines.

The Ducal Palace of Sassuolo
The Ducal Palace is one of the most important cultural landmarks in Sassuolo and one of the great Baroque residences of northern Italy.
Its present appearance began to take shape in 1634, when Duke Francesco I d’Este transformed the earlier castle into an elegant residence for the court.
Among its most memorable spaces are the monumental rooms decorated with frescoes, stucco and illusionistic architecture and the spectacular Gallery of Bacchus.
Discover the Salse di Nirano Nature Reserve
Located in the hills of Fiorano Modenese, the Salse di Nirano are one of the most unusual natural attractions in the province of Modena.
